What is rest?

Do you ever have a whole day off yet at the end of the day you still feel tired? You still feel depleted. You still feel uneasy.

Rest for a long time for me was catching up on Hulu. Checking in on Facebook. Oversleeping and usually my favorite snacks during all of them. Yet I would always feel uneasy. Unrested.

Until it clicked.

Rest is about filling. Filling my soul with things that uplift it. Stuffing Facebook, food, Hulu, and extra sleep won’t ever work.

I need to stuff my soul with the things that fire me up. The things that bring me back to my core. Quiet time, warm tea & scripture, being outdoors, taking a nap in the sun, fresh whole food prepared for a picnic, cuddles, farmers markets, sermons, running, reading, being goofy.

These are what my rest days need to be filled with. These are what yours should be filled with too. Like a good friend Nancy said earlier on tour. “More face to face time, less screen to screen.”

I challenge you today to put down the distractions, the screens, the to do list and fill your soul what it really needs to REST.
